With more than 25 years of educational experience in London and New York, Jeannie Risolo, founder of Compass Education, gained a solid perspective on the academic and social challenges facing students at the elementary, middle school, high school and college levels. She is certified by both New York State and New York City in elementary, mathematics and administration. Over the past decade and a half, she has designed and shaped math curriculum at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School, the Math Initiative District 2, and The Mandell School where she advised teachers, parents and administration. At Compass Education, Jeannie has built a team of educators spanning other modern curriculum – who share in a common passion to use cutting-edge teaching and learning techniques.
During her career, she discovered that many students need more personal attention and that families need support in developing a student’s individual learning path. She also realized that elementary students had different learning styles that could not be met in crowded classrooms. Similarly, she recognized that when middle school students become more independent from teachers and parents, they struggle with getting organized, studying, managing time and becoming advocates for themselves. But middle schools are not structured to attend to these personal needs.
The Compass Education team is experienced in a wide scope of learning styles, differentiating instruction to meet the needs of the learner, developing learning tools to support the student with organization, study, and time-management skills, building confidence and self esteem, and creating successful students in mathematics, science, reading and the humanities.
In personalizing the learning path for students, Compass Education guides students from early childhood intervention through 12th grade, college-level education and coaching newly college graduates with navigating their professional careers. We also prepare students for standardized testing (SAT, ACT, ISEE, SSAT, State Testing).
Our services include private tutoring, serving as family liaison between home and school. We accomplish this in-person and with using the latest technology, such as Skype and FaceTime.
As needed, Compass Education provides parents with educational coaching so all parties understand current education techniques and standards. We accomplish this through workshops that focus on what teaching and learning looks like today within school environments and professional development.
Our team is imbued with a philosophy that believes all school experiences should nurture the inherent motivation of children to learn and to cultivate the individuals they will become. Progressive education provides for this through a rigorous thoughtful curriculum, while at the same time teaching the skills that permit children to make meaning of their own learning. This then allows for communication of their understandings.
